Halloween Fun

We had a lot of Halloween fun the last week of October. We went on a ghost hunt, played pumpkin tag and enjoyed many activities on Halloween!

I would like to introduce Chad Johnson from Sterling College. He is doing his student teaching with our very own U.V. students. He is doing a great job and has been introducing students to many fun scooter activities this week.

Important Information

The K-8 Physical Education Department is in the final year of the Carol M. White PEP grant. This grant requires us to gather information each year about our students’ moderate to vigorous physical activity, outside of school time. During your child’s physical education class, students are recording the activity that they did the night before. Please discuss moderate to vigorous activities that your child was involved in, so they are prepared to record on their data sheet. We will be recording what activity they did from the evening of September 20th-September 26th.

- Moderate activity is defined as, “Activity that results in an increase in breathing or heart rate (walking briskly, dancing, swimming, or biking on a level terrain.)

- Vigorous activity is defined as, Activity that results in hard breathing or sweating (jogging, high-impact aerobic dancing, swimming continuous laps, or biking uphill).

Thank you for your continued support of our physical education program.

Week #3

This week the 2nd/3rd graders enjoyed the wonderful weather and did activities with foxtails. We use foxtails to work on throwing and catching. A foxtail has a ball on the end and a long tail that you use to swing and throw to your partner. You are to catch the foxtail by the tail to earn points. The closer you catch to the ball the more points you get. I had each group add up there points. One student said to me "Hey, we are doing some math today"! Check out this video of our students using the foxtails!

Kindergarten and 1st grade students also worked on throwing skills this week. We focused on underhand throwing. This video shows our Kindergarten students working with a classmate to earn points by underhand throwing a beanbag into a hoop.

Week #2

Over the last two weeks the 1st-3rd grade have been learning ASAP activities. These are warm-up activities we can do the minute we get in the gym. Slimed, spin-top fitness, switcheroo, shaky, shaky jog, scarf tag, side by side tag, smugglers, movement music, add on scramble and meet in the middle were the activities we participated in.

We made a change this week in Kindergarten, in that we see each class every other day. We have been warming up with an Alphabet Warm-up, and working with our classmates with Follow the leader and Whistle Hoop. We also "Cleaned Up Our Rooms", beginning work on throwing skills, which is what we will be focusing on this next week.

Week #1

The game begins in 3,2,1.....this week students at Union Valley were contestants on "Minute to Win It" (PE version). Various challenges included keeping a balloon up in the air, knocking down dominoes with a marble put through a pool noodle, moving balls with a hockey stick into a hoop, bouncing balls and having a partner catch them into a bucket and hiking a ball into a hula hoop. Students worked together to accomplish these tasks in a one minute time period.

Kindergarten students joined us this week!! We are excited to have them part of U.V. In P.E. we are learning how to start an activity and how to stop when Mrs. Siemens says 3,2,1 or if the music stops. Of course we are having fun moving as we practice! Ask your student what 3,2,1 means!
